Live in
Rome, Italy
View Original Description
The city of Rome is one of the most amazing places to live in the world. Famous and spectacular art, a culturally rich 2,500 year history and some of the most well-known buildings, squares, fountains and monuments on the planet make residency in this ancient city like living in a museum. The city presents excellent weather and a laid-back lifestyle along with the impressive art and architecture that are seemingly around every corner. Rome is Italy’s capital and a truly cosmopolitan city with nearly 3 million residents within the city limits.
Italians prefer to communicate in their native tongue. Although French, German and English are studied as secondary languages by many Italians, the ability to speak, read and write in Italian will prove to be a great benefit. Housing and the basic costs of living can be expensive in Rome although neighborhoods away from the city center and some university communities provide more affordable options in quality locations with traditional supermarkets and somewhat lower housing costs. Italian cuisine is among the finest in the world and the total immersion experience will provide many options to enjoy and learn the secrets of local cooks. Public transportation is excellent with car ownership not a necessity.
Italy is not a particularly easy country to legally immigrate into – stays longer than 90 days require special visas. European Union citizens have the right to live and work in Italy without special permits or visas. Student visas allow accredited applicants the right to work up to 20 hours per week. Companies that require a particular skill may offer immigrants a job in Rome that requires the employer to then obtain all the appropriate paperwork before work can begin. Some independent work visas are available but a strict quota system and copious amounts of documentation are part of that process. Retired persons or those not needing to earn a living in Rome will find an easier path. Proof of a place to stay, an income that will support the immigrant, evidence of medical insurance, a statement regarding the reason for the move and a document from an appropriate authority indicative that the immigrant has never been convicted of a felony are the minimum requirements.
Your dream to live among some of the planet’s greatest examples of art and architecture can be fulfilled once you make the commitment to Live in Rome. Add this monumental goal to your bucket list and start exploring all that is required. Many have done it; you can too.
