The United States of America (USA) is comprised of 50 states and a federal district (Washington D.C.) with a population of nearly 325 million people. The USA also controls several territories in the Pacific and Caribbean regions. The USA is considered the 3rd largest country in the world by land area and population. The USA possesses the world’s largest economy and the 6th highest per-capita income. The USA is referred to as “The Land of Opportunity” due to the significant economic successes that have been demonstrated over the years by many of its immigrants and citizens. Some of the world’s greatest cities are located in the USA along with many of the most renowned universities on the planet with 15 schools of higher learning considered among the top 20 in the world. The country boasts a population that is very culturally diverse. There are over 1 million members of 31 different ancestry groups represented in the makeup of the residents. English is considered the de-facto national language with some states making secondary language designations as having special status in that particular state. After English, the most popular primary languages of USA residents are Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
The government welcomes visitors to the USA . Stays of up to 90 days are allowable with a visa waiver provided to visitors from 36 countries on an approved list. Residents of other countries must apply and be approved for a visitor visa. Longer stays are possible for those pursuing an education or seeking medical treatment among other approved reasons. In general, to be eligible to apply for an immigrant visa and potential residency status, a foreign citizen must be sponsored by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident that is a relative or by a prospective employer and be the beneficiary of an approved petition filed with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Other categories for eligibility for permanent or temporary residency includes: Foreign nationals with extraordinary ability in Sciences, Arts, Education, Business or Athletics; Physicians; Temporary agricultural workers; Specialty occupations in fields requiring highly specialized knowledge. The ability to work legally is determined by the type and restrictions related to the particular visa obtained that allows entry into the country. A national lottery that provides 50,000 permanent residency visas annually for what are referred to as Diversity Immigrants is also a path to legal residency in the USA. The lottery is administered by the US Department of State to provide for a class of immigrants known as "diversity immigrants" (DV immigrants). This lottery awards the ability to apply for permanent resident visas to natives of countries deemed to have low rates of immigration to the United States. The list of eligible countries changes from time to time.
