Off-road to
Gila Cokeovens, Arizona
View Original Description
The Gila Coke Ovens near Florence, Arizona, also known as the Cochran Ovens, are five historic, beehive-shaped stone structures built in the 1870s to turn mesquite wood into coke for smelting ore from the nearby ghost town of Cochran, across the Gila River. These remarkably preserved ovens are a National Historic Landmark and are now accessible to the public via a remote, rough off-road trail (often called the "Coke Ovens Trail") that starts near Florence, offering a glimpse into Arizona's mining past.
