The Mission of Our Lady of Sorrows of Chillá or of the Sorrows of the South was founded in August 1721 on the shores of the sea by the Jesuit missionary Clemente Guillén, for its construction it was endowed by the Pious Fund of the Californias. In opposition to the name Mission de la Virgen de los Dolores del Sur, there was a Visitation Chapel called Nuestra Señora de los Dolores del Nortenear the site where the Mission was located. The mission was located halfway between the missions of Loreto and La Paz, it served as a rest for those who traveled from one mission to another. In 1737 the Jesuit missionaries Lambert Hostell (German) and Bernhart re-founded the mission furtherwest, in the La Pasión stream, as subsidiaries the Visitation Chapels of La Concepción, La Santísima Trinidad, La Redención and La Resurreción. In 1768 the superiors of the order ordered its permanent abandonment due to the lack of population, water and the inhospitable nature of the region, the few newly evangelized natives who lived in the area were transferred to the Mission of Todos Santos. Only few foundations remain of the mission, to access it it is necessary to travel on horseback or hiking for a few hours.
