Off-road to
Alstrom Point, Lake Powell, Utah
View Original Description
Alstrom Point has a great view of Lake Powell, Gunsight Butte and Padre Bay on the Utah side of the lake.
The point is about 90 minutes from Page, Arizonia. A high clearance four wheel drive vehicle is preferred but any high clearance vehicle should be able to make it. The slickrock at the end can be difficult to follow but is cairned. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable.
Great photos at sunset but sunrise is not bad either. It's a good location from which to photograph the full moon.
Arrive at least 2 hours before the sunset to enjoy this magnificent view on the Lake Powell. But don't wait too long after the sunset since getting lost on the way back in the dark is a good possibility.
Consider camping at Alstrom Point overnight and driving out the next morning. There are a several good flat spots to choose from with fire rings. All offering the same spectacular view. There are no camping amenities at Alstrom Point and there is no access to the lake.
The Visitor Center in Big Water provides useful informations about the road condition and maps.
It takes about 25 miles from Big Water to the point. At Hwy 89 and Big Water, turn off on Ethan Allen Drive. Then make a right at West Concord Bridge Drive (right goes onto BLM road 300 (Google map- NP 230)), bearing right at Squaw Canyon (around mile 12.7). At the next Y (about a mile later) you will see a sign for Smoky Mountain Road. Bears right onto 340. At around mile 18 ypu will see a sign for Alstrom Point Trail. Right right onto this and continue for almost 7 miles. The last 2 miles are slow (especially the last mile).
