Participate in a
Long Distance Charity Challenge
View Original Description
Ultra-Events with the focus on fundraising by over-achievers have grown in popularity throughout the world. These unique events, designed to attract the likes of walkers, runners, cyclists, climbers, swimmers, golfers and enthusiasts of other pursuits from dancing to tree-sitting, typically started with a few people hoping to make a difference and draw attention to their charitable cause in the process. Participants with one eye focused on personal achievement and the other on supporting a worthy cause raise badly needed resources for targeted charitable purposes.
The challenge of Stand Up America raises funds for a number of underrepresented charities by participants in a 2,000 mile (3,200km) elliptical cycle ride that in 2013 will be staged to coincide with arrival in New Orleans, Louisiana just in time for the National Football League’s Super Bowl. The challenge begins in San Diego, California and will find participants that cover the entire course as well as those joining the challenge at a number of other cities along the path.
The Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon which describes itself as an exhilarating test of fitness and an unforgettable weekend in the spectacular Scottish Highlands includes a 1.35km Swim in Loch Tay, a Run/Walk over 7 Munros for approximately 24km, an 11km Kayak challenge followed by a 54km cycle around Loch Tay. Each participant signals the completion of their challenge by slicing a melon in two with a sword. The event raises badly needed funds for selected charities including the Mercy Corps.
Multi-Day events to raise money for breast cancer research are staged around the world by the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Avon Foundation for Women. Other organized extreme activity events with a charitable focus include Summiting Mount Kiliminjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain, a 60 mile cross-country ski challenge to reach the South Pole in Antarctica, an 8 day Run/Walk challenge that traces the stony pathways of The Great Wall of China, 24 hour (and longer) Dance Marathons, Golf Marathons and almost any activity that can combine endurance with fund-raising.
