Rio Upano, Ecuador
View Original Description
Rio Upano. “The River of the Sacred Waterfalls”, winds its way through the rainforest in Ecuador on its descent from over 900 meters high up in the Andes. Whitewater rafting enthusiasts consider the world class trip down the Rio Upano a “must-do”. In addition to Class III and IV rapids, rafters encounter an ancient, indigenous tribe that makes their home along the banks of the river, the “Shuar” Indians, who are dependent upon the river for their very existence. As the river winds its way, rafters observe deep jungles replete with brilliant butterflies, exotic tropical birds, oropendolas (a magnificent bird seen only in this part of the world), egrets and birds of prey between the challenging rapids on the 100 km river trip and, of course, the glorious waterfalls from which the river earned it’s nickname. At various spots along the journey the river enters narrow canyons with the rushing river water squeezed into the constricted passageways giving rise to challenging whitewater. Very near the end of the trip, one such towering canyon is framed with a number of massive waterfalls cascading from 50 meters above the river.
The Rio Upano is best reached from Quito, Ecudaor. Professional tour operators provide transportation to the base camps and expert guides for your trip as well as all the supplies, rafting and camping equipment you may need. Time on the river runs in the range of 3 or 4 days for the complete course.
