North Johnstone River, Australia
View Original Description
Just south of Cairns, Australia in the shadow of Queensland’s highest peak, Mt. Bartle Frere, the wild North Johnstone River rages its way through a spectacular gorge carved from volcanic rock surrounded by the ancient rainforest of Palmerston National Park on its way to the Pacific Ocean. Typically, trips down the North Johnstone take from 4 to 6 days encountering plenty of Level IV and V rapids on an 80 km course between a landscape that includes 3,000 year old trees, rock walls, basalt cliffs, waterfalls and Aboriginal burial sites. Nights are spent camping along the banks of the river gazing at starlit skies and the luminous effect of fire flies while resting up for the challenges the river will bring the following day. Sites and named rapids found along the course boast exotic monikers such as Stairway to Heaven, Frog Cave, Mushroom, Rooster Tail and Champagne Falls. Depending on recent rains, the best time to make the trip is typically between April and June, Fall in the Southern Hemisphere.
