Raft or Kayak Soča River, Slovenia

The Soča (Soka) River runs 140 kilometers from the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps through a series of gorges surrounded by a ring of magnificent mountains (including the famous Triglav Peak, the tallest mountain in Slovenia) until it enters the Adriatic Sea after crossing over Northeastern Italy. The almost impossible to believe green hue of the river as it moves through the verdant valley gives rise to the moniker “The Emerald Beauty” that has been bestowed upon the river. The river presents stretches of challenging whitewater dissecting dramatic rocky gorges between expanses of calmer flows as it winds along its path. The Soca River attracts accomplished whitewater rafters and kayakers as well as beginners with its broad spectrum of challenges. The town of Bovec in the Julian Alps just below Mount Kanin is the center for rafters and kayakers seeking to challenge the mighty Soca River. Other adventures on the mighty Soca have their origin in the small town of Kobarid. The Soca presents challenging Class III and IV rapids between periods of lazy meandering that provides for ample time to take in the beautiful scenery of pastoral Alpine valleys and quaint villages before engaging the river as it churns and heaves its way past majestic waterfalls through heart-stopping passages. Operators offer guided excursions on the Soca with a mixed bag of options; some tours include whitewater rafting mixed in with tubing, a full day of kayaking and “hydrospeeding” with the use of high-buoyancy floats and flippers, all as part of a week long adventure. The capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana with links to all major methods of transportation including Brnik International Airport, is less than 2 hours by automobile away from Bovec. The city is also within a 5 hour ride from Vienna, Austria and a number of other major European cities are within relatively close proximity. Bovec offers a wide range of accommodation options including hotels, wellness clubs and spas, tourist farms and private homes that offer lodging. The small town of Kobarid is another location where adventurers desirous of the Soca River experience may find outfitters eager to escort them. Whether you are an accomplished rafter or just a beginner, your dream of whitewater rafting or kayaking on one of the most pristine rivers in all of Europe may be satisfied by including Raft or Kayak the Soča River in Slovenia on your list. Schedule your trip between April and October to make sure you experience the best weather and start preparing yourself for an experience of a lifetime.
