Visit Trunk Bay (St John), USVI

Trunk Bay is widely thought to be one of the Caribbean’s most photographed beaches and often finds itself on the World’s Top 10 Beach lists. On St. John, Trunk Bay is the most popular beach not only for its clear water, white sand and mountainside view but also because of its underwater snorkeling trail. The Trunk Bay Underwater Trail is a 225-yard, self-guiding snorkeling trail marked by underwater signs that identify coral reef life. The Trail is in relatively shallow water and most appropriate for its cultural and historical significance. There's also a small land mass about 50 yards off the beach that has a great coral reef with thousands of fish and different types of marine life. The unique below the surface trail helps snorkelers understand what they are viewing in the underwater world. Near the Trunk Bay lifeguard stand is a gathering spot for weekly guided snorkeling trail excursions. These guided tours are great for first time snorkelers. National Geographic Society has labeled Trunk Bay as the most beautiful beach in the world. It is one of the most popular beaches on the island whose amenities include a snack bar, showers and restrooms, lifeguards, and, most famously, an underwater trail for snorkeling its coral reef. Trunk Bay is the only National Park beach on Saint John which requires a fee to visit. There is no fee to enter either Virgin Islands National Park or Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. Trunk Bay is the only beach in the National Park Service that has an entrance fee. There is no parking fee, but the lot fills up EARLY. They have chair & snorkeling gear rental, as well as a snack shack, bathrooms & showers. There are 4 mooring bouys for overnight stays. Day use of the park moorings is free but a self-registration fee of $15 per night is required for overnight use between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. For your convenience, payment stations have been placed at the following locations: Caneel Watersports Shop, Hawksnest Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay Camps, Leinster Bay, Saltpond Bay, and Great Lameshur Bay (check the tag on your mooring for exact directions to the payment station).
