Ride Andrew's Elevator, Hotel del Coronado, Coronado, California
The Hotel del Coronado features a historic birdcage elevator, nicknamed "Andrew's Elevator," in its lobby, which has been in operation since 1887. While modernized in 2020, it retains its historical charm and is known for its unique look and the operator, Andrew Lounsbury, who hand-operated it for 41 years.
From 1979 to 2020, Andrew hand-operated our historic birdcage elevator with unmatched grace, heart, and a spirit that lit up every ride. He was a storyteller, a musician, and a warm, familiar face who made every guest feel like family. Andrew had a remarkable gift for remembering names, faces, and stories. He greeted returning guests like old friends, offering serenades and infusing each moment with joy. He was a constant at The Del—a keeper of traditions, and a living piece of its history.
The hotel also has wheelchair-accessible elevators.
