Ride
El Chepe through Copper Canyon, Mexico
View Original Description
The Copper Canyon Railway (Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifico as its known locally) traverses over 650 km of some of the world’s most scenic wilderness from the Pacific Ocean, through the Sonoran-Sinaloan transitional tropical forest, the western Sierra Madre, the edge of Copper Canyon and the Chihuahuan Desert. The train engages 37 bridges (as high as 100 meters and as long as 500), 87 tunnels (the longest of which is over 1800 meters) during its trip through incredibly diverse landscape that includes sheer canyon walls, cascading waterfalls and expansive desert plains. The route is a testament to Mexican engineering achievement and functions as an important cargo route between the stations along its line.
The trains, known as “El Chepe”, begin and end in the cities of Chihuahua, Mexico (in the Mexican state of the same name) and Los Mochis, Sinoloa, Mexico near the port city of Tompolobampo. Elevations during the trip range from seal level, at the terminus in Los Mochis, to over 2,400 meters as El Chepe crosses the continental divide. Options exist for stops at one or more of the stations along the route to explore the adjacent area and engage in excursions to river raft, hike, explore missions and ranches or just relax in the magnificent surroundings. The first class “express” train makes the complete trip every day in a little over 14 hours, encapsulating the passengers in luxurious coaches. There is an “economy” train that runs every day as well making additional stops and without some of the accoutrements of the express El Chepe.
You may have dreamed of experiencing the incomparable views from the luxurious seat of an El Chepe train as it winds its way through Mexico’s enchanting Copper Canyon. Adding this trip to your list today sets you on the path to making sure your fantasy is realized.
