Ski or Snowboard off
KT-22, Palisades Tahoe, California
View Original Description
KT-22 is one of the best chairlifts in North America. KT-22 offers 2,000 ft. of chutes, cliffs, steeps, and challenging terrain. It sustains a pitch of 35 degrees for nearly 1,500 vertical feet. McConkeys is accessed off the KT-22 chair lift and rated at a 68-degree pitch in its steepest section. Originally referred to as Eagle's Nest, it was renamed for the late Shane McConkey, who was one of the most influential skiers to come through Squaw Valley.
In 1946, before there were lifts in Squaw Valley, Sandy Poulsen, wife of the resort's founder, hiked a steep 8,200-foot peak to the left of where Squaw's gondola now sits. Intimidated, she traversed back and forth to descend, making 22 kick turns (KTs). Hence the name.
