Macy's Wooden Escalators, New York City
View Original Description
Macy's Herald Square in New York City boasts a unique feature: 20 wooden escalators, built between 1920 and 1930 by the Otis Elevator Company. Made of oak and ash, with ribbed wooden treads and brass fittings, they represent a bygone era of engineering. While the mechanical parts have been updated and modern safety measures have been implemented, the wooden structure remains largely intact.
