Race Across America (RAAM)
View Original Description
One of the most respected endurance events in the world, The Race Across America (RAAM) puts cyclists on a continuous course that covers over 4,800 kilometers with 52,000 meters of vertical ascent and extreme weather conditions with the need to cover between 500 and 800 kilometers every day to finish within the allotted time frame. The race covers a greater distance than the Tour de France while crammed into a shorter time frame. While professional cyclists point their schedules to the competitive part of this race, the event is open to amateurs as well, competing as individuals or teams with the caveat that they must complete the event in less than nine days.
The course sees its starting line in Oceanside, California with the route mapped across 12 of the United States before reaching the finish line in Annapolis, Maryland. Typically held in early to mid-June, the race has a staggered start with solo men, solo women and 2 to 8 rider teams beginning their attempts to conquer the course spread over 4 days. This staggered start puts the teams at the finish line within a 3 day window 7 to 9 days after the first solo riders leave Oceanside. In addition to the starting line and the dramatic finish in Annapolis, Maryland, spectators flock to places like Durango, Colorado to cheer the participants along their grueling path.
