Ride tide on the Shubenacadie River, Nova Scotia, Canada

The Shubenacadie River is a tidal river which empties into the Bay of Fundy, a body of water world famous for the phenomenal heights of its tides. Powered Zodiacs are boarded at low tide. They navigate down a lazy river past sandbars, mudflats, old Acadian dykelands, and forests. At times the river is banked by cliffs towering 200 feet. The natural beauty of the river is magnificent. At the mouth of the Shubenacadie the boats meet the tidal bore. The Zodiacs are repeatedly driven into the "standing waves" -- the rapids created by the incoming tide -- and rafters are tossed around like so much flotsam and jetsam, both inside and outside of the boats. Warmer and wetter than whitewater rafting, tidal rafting is something entirely different. Mud-sliding down the red clay banks is also a not-to-be-missed part of the Shubenacadie experience.
