Hear the Ring of
Notre Dame’s Emmanuel Grand Bell (bourdon Emmanuel), Paris, France
View Original Description
Ring Notre Dame de Paris’s only surviving original bell (out of the ten), Emmanuel Grand Bell. The largest, oldest, and most well-known of Notre-Dame's bells is the bourdon Emmanuel, which was cast in 1686. Emmanuel is considered by campanologists as one of Europe's finest bells and was designated a national historic landmark in 1944 when it rang during the liberation of Paris.
The bells survived the fire in April 2019 and today are still hanging in the bell towers as the cathedral undergoes restoration. They are undergoing cleaning and were rung on the 1-year anniversary of the fire.
Notre-Dame Cathedral has 10 bells. The north tower holds eight bells while the slightly smaller south tower holds the two largest bells - including bourdon Emmanuel. During the French Revolution in 1791 and 1792, all the bells, except for Emmanuel, were lowered, broken, and melted down for ammunition by the revolutionaries.
