Run a
Marathon
View Original Description
A Marathon is a running road race of exactly 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles), a distance which commemorates the legendary run of the Greek soldier, Pheidippides, who carried the victory message from the Battle of Marathon to his commanders in Athens in 490 BC. The Marathon is regularly run in the Olympic Games, one of the original contests of the modern Olympiad. There are also over 500 regularly scheduled Marathons held around the world every year.
Completing a Marathon is a goal sought by runners everywhere. Some of the more well-known road races require entrants to qualify in various ways. Most accept all-comers with some limitations on the number of racers. Runner’s World Magazine named the “World’s Top 10 Marathons” as inclusive of Amsterdam, Honolulu, Paris, Rotterdam and Stockholm along with the iconic races held in New York City, Boston, Chicago, London and Berlin. Less prestigious but notable of their own accord are races held in Los Angeles, Rome, at the Great Wall of China, the Big Five Marathon in the African Savannah and the Midnight Sun Marathon held within the Arctic Circle in Tromso, Norway.
A Marathon is not just for the fittest of athletes. Many “couch potatoes” have used the focus of finishing a Marathon as a motivator to get themselves in better physical condition with the anticipation of travelling to an exotic venue with perhaps thousands of other runners all seeking the same result: completing the entire course. Time doesn’t seem to be important, although it’s a measure used by those who have chosen to run multiple races but the achievement of completing the race allows the participant to include themselves in a small minority of those that have. There are plenty of training guides available that will take the committed from the sofa to the finish line in a matter of months. The most important aspect seems to be picking a race to focus upon and then to get up and get moving. Many races have divisions for wheelchair athletes.
Perhaps your dreams see you crossing the finish line of a Marathon in one of the cities on your list of “Must Visit” destinations. Imagine your family and friends cheering you toward that goal. Add Complete a Marathon to your list today and start working toward that worthwhile goal.
