Sail Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, Australia

The Aussies call it “The Bluewater Classic”. It starts the first weekday after Christmas, summertime in Sydney, and covers 1,170 kilometers from Sydney Harbor, in the waters of the Southern Pacific Ocean through the Bass Strait and then across the Tasman Sea to Hobart, Tasmania. The race is considered to be the most challenging yacht race in the world. Rough seas and gale force winds complicate the task of navigating the sailing yachts through the treacherous waters and significant experience and skill is required in addition to a dominant vessel if a captain expects his boat to have a chance to win the contest. Recent winners of the race have been able to make the trip in less than 40 hours over a course that the victor took 11 days to complete in 1945. Your dreams may include a visit to Australia to witness this iconic event in the Australian sports world. After you have spent time examining the craft during pre-race preparations during the days before the race you might consider booking a spot on a spectator boat to watch the start of the competition and all of the on-water action. You can include a tour of the Sydney Opera House, view the Harbour Bridge and take in all the famous sites of Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay while you are there.
