Sail Seychelles Islands

Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 or so islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of east Africa and northeast of the island of Madagascar just south of the equator. This independent nation is officially called The Republic of Seychelles. The islands vary in their makeup in that there are over 40 that are granite based, a few that are coral cays with the balance having evolved from the ocean as raised coral atolls. Air temperatures vary only a few degrees throughout the year making for temperate but somewhat humid weather. The island’s inhabitants are typically friendly, of many different races and cultures but heavily influenced by the French who took control of the islands in the 18th century before being replaced by the English. The country gained its independence in 1976. The islands boasts beautiful tropical scenery and exotic plant life, giant tortoises and abundant sea birds. Diving and snorkeling in pristine turquoise waters around the islands allow cruisers the ability to get up close and personal with the colorful inhabitants of the unique underwater world of the Seychelles. The largest island, Mahe, is the center of the activity for Seychelles, where 90% of the population resides and the location of the capital city, Victoria. The second largest island in the Seychelles, La Digue along with the idyllic The “Sisters” (Grande Soeur and Petit Soeur), Booby, Aride and Curieuse are the most often visited of this island chain along with Praslin and Cousin. These islands provide a broad range of experiences from sleepy little bay front towns to uninhabited atolls with dense forests and unspoiled coastlines. The waters of Seychelles have been enjoyed by anglers for decades seeking the ultimate sailfish experience and guides are readily available to accommodate your expedition if billfishing strikes your fancy. On Mahe at Port Victoria or at Baie Ste Anne in Praslin Island are found the destinations of choice for yachtsmen kicking off their sailing adventures in these waters. The Mahe airport is close by Port Victoria and Praslin has its own airfield with connecting service from Mahe. Charter companies on Mahe and Praslin are able to arrange bareboat and crewed charters of catamarans, monohulls and luxury yachts to satisfy even the most seasoned yachtsman. The charter providers can accommodate small or large groups seeking to complete this dream of a holiday in Seychelles.
