Tonga's Vava'u Islands
View Original Description
Vava’u, Tonga is a chain of islands between Tahiti and Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. The 41 islands of Vava’u are part of a larger archipelago comprised of a total of 171 islands spread among 4 distinct groups. New islands emerge occasionally as a result of continuing volcanic activity in the region with the most recent manifestation occurring in 2006. Vava’u consists of one very large island with 40 other smaller land masses.
Sailing in Vava’u provides access to endless white sand beaches and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world among coral reefs in crystal clear water with visibilities of up to 50 meters. The southeast trade winds, averaging between 10 and 25 knots, afford some of the best cruising conditions in the South Pacific. Scenic anchorage in sheltered bays that are well protected can be found typically within a few kilometers of one another yet quick access to the open ocean provides sailing adventures that will get even the most seasoned sailor’s heart beating. It’s not unusual to encounter Humpback Whales between July and November as they enter the Tongan waters to breed and calve before returning to the colder waters of Antarctica. The islands offer a number of charming diversions, among them traditional Tongan feasts staged at Hinakauea Beach on the island of Pangiamotu complete with locally grown fruit and vegetables, whole pig roasted on spits and the lightly intoxicating Kava drink. The authentic Tongan singing and dancing continues well after darkness falls when you will return to your yacht to prepare for the next day’s sail.
Sailing yachts, from day charters to multi-week excursion ready craft, ranging in size from 13 meters to upwards of 35 meters accommodating as many as 30 cruisers may be arranged through a number of charter companies serving the Tongan waters. Skippers, crews and cooks may also be hired for all or part of your sailing adventure. Tonga is easily reached by commercial airlines. The Tongan people are friendly and outgoing and warmly welcome sailors visiting their islands.
You may very well fulfill your dream of sailing between idyllic islands in the South Pacific by adding a trip to Tonga and the Vava’u island group to your list. Start planning that holiday of a lifetime today.
