Sea Kayak
San Blas Islands (Kuna Yala), Panama
View Original Description
There is at least one San Blas Island for each day of the year (that’s a minimum of 365 islands), and only about 36 of them are inhabited. The islands belong to the Kuna indigenous people. These people look after the multiple islands in the archipelago, so for those who want to explore the islands by kayak it’s best to have a guide. Overall, the islands vary in size and purpose. Some of the uninhabited islands are the size of a small sandbar or are just a mound of sand occupied by a single palm tree. There are some island that’s that are a bit larger and available for camping. While still other islands are ideal for pulling up a boat, doing some snorkeling in the crystal clear aquamarine waters, and then kicking back and having a picnic.
Although, the waters are relatively calm its important to stay flexible since weather conditions, currents, and tides can change at any moment. There are many guide companies available that can help tour sea kayakers through some of the islands as well as point out optimal snorkeling spots. When exploring the islands its important to have a Kuna guide. A native guide can help with any translations, the Kuna speak the Native American language of Dulegaya, but they can also gain access to some of the Kuna inhabited islands.
