Sea Kayak Chiloé Archipelago, Chile

Chiloé is the second largest island in Chile. The island has a rich history and one side is sunny filled with beaches and dunes, while the other (the east coast) consists of inlets that link scattered islands making it an ideal spot for sea kayaking. The sun doesn’t shine much on this side of the island and that adds to the general mystique of the place. Here it can rain any time, but summer is the best time to visit since the days are long and it also happens to be when the penguins breed. Gliding down the mist-filled inlets it’s easy to feel transported to ancient times. To really experience that sensation, consider kayaking at dawn and catching a sunrise. It’s also not far from the Pacific Ocean so the river areas are affected by the tides. Regardless if kayaking with a group or going solo after renting some kayaks, it’s important to stay in touch with the base camp by radio. There are quite a few spots to start a kayaking adventure in Chiloé, but one place worth checking out is Dalcahue channel. It’s a good starting point since the waters are typically calm and there’s an abundance of seabirds including seagulls, black-necked swans, and others nearby. After a long day of kayaking, be sure to end the day with some local seafood cuisine, Chiloé is home to some of the best in Chile.
