Located in the northernmost section of Mexico, Baja, California offers visitors multiple places to explore by kayak. Of particular note is the National Marine Park of Loreto, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Along with the islands of the Sea of Cortez, the complete site consists of 244 islands, islets, and coastal areas. The waters and islands are home to a diverse amount of marine life and birds including gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and more. Combined with the mangroves, sheltered coves, and picture perfect white sand beaches, kayaking in Baja is an experience unlike any other. A kayaking trip to Baja should be planned in advanced and those wishing to explore the area should set aside at least a week to make the most of the experience. For starters, getting to Loreto can be expensive if not booking in advance since it’s not exactly a hub. It’s also best to sign up with a group since permits are required and the locals know the best places to stop for some hiking, taking a break for lunch, or even camping for the night. The best time for a kayak trip is in early fall or late spring. During summer months the temperature can reach as high as 100 degrees. Many of the outfitters are equipped to accommodate beginner to advanced kayakers.
