Cheetah in the Wild
View Original Description
Cheetahs are rare and beautiful cats, well known for their incredible speed - they can run faster than any other land animal— as fast as 112 to 120 km/h (70 to 75 mph) and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to over 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds.
The cheetah likes to live in an open grasslands, savannahs, areas of dense vegetation, and mountainous terrain.
Cheetahs are not easy to spot on safari, only around 12,000 remain in the wild, spread through eastern and southwestern Africa. Your best chance of seeing them is in Tanzania's Serengeti or in various reserves in Namibia. A small population (estimated at about fifty) survive in the Khorasan Province of Iran, where conservationists are taking steps to protect them.
