King Snake
View Original Description
Why are these called the king of snakes? Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but one way king snakes might have gotten that name is their amazing ability to hunt other snakes who, unlike them, produce venom. You heard us right! The king snake does not produce venom and it successfully hunts and kills poisonous snakes including rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. How do they do that? The king snake, one of the most widespread species of snake in the US, is resistant to other snakes’ venom. So bite all you want, poisonous snakeys, you ain’t gonna stop the king snake! King snakes are active hunters who kill by constriction. They don’t mess around.
King snakes are also known for their bright colors. They are often banded with bright colors interspersed with dark ones. Unfortunately, there is a very poisonous snake, the coral snake, that can be mistaken for some species of kingsnakes, so it’s probably best to keep your distance if you come upon a banded snake in the wild!
