See
Koala in the Wild in Australia
View Original Description
Seeing koalas their natural habitat is difficult since they blend in so well with their background/trees, are nocturnal and feed only on certain varieties of eucalypt which means they are confined to colonies in specific locations and not widespread. So going to a reserve and soem national parks is recommended.
Koalas are found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Their range extends from the Atherton Tableland west of Cairns in Qld to islands off the coast of Victoria and South Australia in the south, and west to central and western Qld, NSW and Victoria.
Some of the best place to see them in the wild are:
Noosa National Park, Queensland
Grampians National Park in Victoria
Raymond Island, Victoria
On the route of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. It is called as one of the best places in Australia to see koalas in the wild.
Koalas are more abundant south of Brisbane but this link indicated they do extend to the Atherton Tablelands which I suggest you should visit as this area is close to Cairns (Google Kuranda).
Bring binoculars in any case if you want to study them in the wild.
