The Sea Cow (Dugong dugon) in the Red Sea, Egypt
View Original Description
The dugong (Dugong dugon) is a marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. The dugong is largely dependent on seagrass communities for subsistence and is thus restricted to the coastal habitats that support seagrass meadows, with the largest dugong concentrations typically occurring in wide, shallow, protected areas such as bays, mangrove channels, the waters of large inshore islands and inter-reefal waters. They are hydrodynamic, and highly muscular, reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing up to 500 kg.
It is one of the peaceful marine creatures that divers love to see during diving trips. The numbers are limited in the Red Sea, as it does not exceed 30 dugongs and is always present in Marsa Mubarak, Abu Dabab, and the beaches of the Wadi El-Gemal Reserve.
