Alaska State Capitol Liberty Bell, Juneau, Alaska
View Original Description
Liberty Bell replica located outside the Alaska State Capitol Building in Juneau.
The inscriptions on the Liberty Bell bears the inscription:
Pass and Stow
PhiladA
MDCCLIII
Which refers to John Pass and John Stow, two founders from Philadelphia, who repaired the new city bell after it had arrived from England but cracked on first try. They recast the bell in 1753, hence the Roman numerals.
The Pass and Stow bell was first termed "the Liberty Bell" in the New York Anti-Slavery Society's journal, Anti-Slavery Record and in an 1835 piece, "The Liberty Bell", Philadelphians were castigated for not doing more for the abolitionist cause.
