Active Volcano
View Original Description
Volcanoes have been documented, studied, revered, feared and worshipped by man since the beginning of time. Perhaps no greater testament to nature’s fury exists on ours or any other world. Volcanoes are a constant reminder that the land we believe is solidly anchored below our feet is in a constant state of movement and that the core of our planet is a mixture of molten rock and gas. Over time the earth’s surface ruptures and these highly compressed substances are expelled into the atmosphere to the wonderment of all who observe. Volcanoes, both active and dormant, have been the destination of choice for legions of travelers worldwide. Recreation in the form of mountaineering, hiking, climbing, camping are supplemented by some more extreme adventures such as volcano boarding (sledding down the side of a volcano on a piece of plywood) or hot-air ballooning over volcanic formations. Many come just to observe.
Molten rock streaming into the ocean from active volcanoes gives rise to the formation of new land and serves as a constant reminder that islands continue to form at the bottom of our oceans only to reveal themselves at a time much further in the future. Smoke, ash and gasses that escape into the atmosphere create surreal skies and unforgettable sunsets. Should your dreams take you to a location where an Active Volcano is nearby we think it would be a worthy addition to your list to include a visit to pursue the activities that may be of interest to you associated with these wonders.
As of April 2023, 49 volcanoes around the world were in continuing eruption status, according to the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program. Check out the program's latest weekly report.
