See Ballard Locks (Hiram M. Chittenden Locks), Seattle, Washington

A few of Seattle's most beautiful features include Lake Washington, Lake Union and Puget Sound. What many visitors are unaware of is that there is a man-made canal surrounded by a lush botanical garden that links the salty waters of Puget Sound to the fresh water lakes. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (known locally as the Ballard Locks) serves as a throughway for boats and also for salmon and steelhead returning from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in the rivers and streams that drain into Lake Washington. The Ballard locks are the busiest locks in the U.S., attracting more than one million visitors a year. The locks lowered the level of Lake Washington, changing the landscape of the greater Seattle area drastically.
