See Bert Loper's "Grand Canyon" Boat, Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona

In July 1949, 79 year old Bert Loper capsized his wooden boat immediately after suffering what appears to have been a fatal heart attack in the boat he built named "Grand Canyon". Loper rolled his boat in 24-1/2-Mile Rapid and was lost beneath the waves. His companions found the boat later that day and dragged it high on the bank of the Colorado. His friends proceeded to solemnly paint in bold letters, “Bert Loper, Grand Old Man of the Colorado, Born July 31, 1869. Died July 8, 1949”, on the bow of the boat. The remnants of Bert’s Boat rest where they were left in 1949 at Colorado Rover Mile 41.5 Right.
