Budville Trading Post, Cibola County, New Mexico
View Original Description
Budville, a small community in Cubero NM was founded in 1928 by H.N. “Bud” Rice as a service station and trading post along this isolated part of Route 66. He also sold bus tickets, owned the local State Motor Vehicle Department concession, and was elected as a local Justice of the Peace.
While Rice was liked by the locals, he wasn’t entirely scrupulous, and often used his position to further his various business interests by exploiting travelers along Route 66. He often overcharged for auto repairs and imposed onerous “fines” for speeders caught in his various speed traps.
On a quiet evening in November of 1967, a stranger entered the trading post and brutally shot and killed Rice and a part-time employee, 82-year-old Blanche Brown. The assailant escaped with $450. Budville then became known as Bloodville. No-one was ever found guilty of their murders.
