Cairns of Laufskálavarða, Iceland
View Original Description
Laufskálavarða is a lava ridge, surrounded by stone cairns. All travellers crossing the desert of Mýrdalssandur for the first time were supposed to pile stones up to make a cairn, which would bring them good fortune on the journey. Some of the hundreds of cairns can be rather large and complex, while others are just a few simple stones.
The legend is that it was a farm destroyed around 984 by a volcanic eruption. Supposedly the old farmer is buried here and it is considered good luck for tourists if they add a rock to a pile.
