View Original Description
La Colombaia , also known as Torre Peliade or Castello di Mare , is a very ancient fortress, placed on a small island at the western end of the port of Trapani . The first construction for military reasons, is, in fact, attributed by the historian Diodoro Siculo, around 260 BC, to Amilcare Barca during the first Punic war. It is 32 meters high, composed of four overlapping floors, with the first used as a cistern, while the original entrance was on the second floor. It is one of the best examples of military architecture in Sicily.
