Gammelstad Church Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Gammelstaden near the city of Luleå, Sweden at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia. These "town" is a cluster of small one room wooden cottages that were used by parishioners to stay overnight so that they sould attend Sunday church service. The town is the best preserved example of this type of town that was once widespread throughout northern Scandinavia. At one point there where 71 such towns through Sweden - only 16 survive to this day.
The town is located about 10 kilometers upstreams Lule River. At its centre is an early 15th century stone church surrounded by 424 wood-built houses. The houses were only used on Sundays and during religious festivals to accommodate worshippers from the surrounding countryside who could not return home the same day because of the distance and difficult travelling conditions.
As Church Village of Gammelstad, Luleå, it was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
