Off-road to Crowley Lake Stone Columns, California

The strange pillar-like formation at Crowley Lake reservoir are up to 20 feet tall connected by high arches. Researchers have determined that the columns were created by cold water percolating down into — and steam rising up out of — hot volcanic ash spewed by a cataclysmic explosion 760,000 years ago. The columns are best viewed during the fall and winter when the lake’s water levels are low, revealing these remarkable formations. Requires a 4WD vehicle or a 4-mile round trip hike along sandy roads to get to the columns.
