Curve XXII (I Will) Sculpture. Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois
View Original Description
Curve XXII 39-foot tall sculpture consists of two highly-polished half-inch thick pieces of stainless steel welded together to produce a narrow rectangle. The official title for Kelly’s subtly curving forty-foot-tall stainless steel monolith is Curve XXII, however, in Chicago it is better known as I Will, the city’s unofficial motto.
'I Will', the title of artist Ellsworth Kelly’s Minimalist sculpture, was the motto adopted by Chicagoans after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The official plaque reportedly gives the sculpture's name as 'Curve XXII', and goes on to say 'dedicated to the I Will spirit of Chicago'.
The sculpture is at the fire’s northernmost end, is dedicated to the determination of Chicagoans to overcome the destruction of the fire and rebuild the city.
The sculpture is located in the NE corner of Fullerton Avenue and Cannon Drive in Chicago's Lincoln Park.
