Devetashka Cave, Bulgaria
View Original Description
Devetashka Cave, discovered in 1921, is one of the biggest caves in Europe. The cave is located 18 kilometers northeast of Lovech and 2 kilometers of the village of Devetaki. The cave has seven different-sized holes in the ceiling, through which sunlight illuminates the central hall. Locals call the cave Oknata (oko- eye) because of these apertures.
This natural phenomenon is about 1500 meters long and has a huge entrance - 35 meter high and 55 meter wide. The cave has 11 underground lakes and rather beautiful cave formations. The cave was named a nature landmark in 1996.
Some time ago, the cave was labeled a military site and was used for the storage of petroleum. The military presence destroyed some of the natural formations in the cave.
At a height is 41 meters, one of the openings is used for bungee jumps in the cave.
The Devetashka Cave is located between the villages of Doirentsi and Devetaki in Bulgaria.
