Originally commissioned for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the sculpture was acquired by the Santa Fe-based art collective Meow Wolf and installed in Santa Fe in 2019 to raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. The sculpture is named for polyethylene, a common type of plastic. The blue whale is 25.89 m (84 ft 11.6 in) long, 8.07 m (26 ft 5.8 in) wide and 4.2 m (13 ft 9.6 in) high.
