Garðar BA 64 Shipwreck, Iceland
View Original Description
The whaling ship Garðar BA 64 is oldest steel ship in Iceland. It is thought to be the oldest ship made of steel in Iceland. It was built in Norway as a whaling vessel exactly one hundred years ago. Garðar was launched in Norway in 1912, the year Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was named Globe IV and was equipped with both sails and a steam engine to use when the weather was still. It was specially reinforced to endure the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean where it was used to hunt whales.
It has been beached for years. In 1981 it was deemed unsafe and as opposed to being scuttled, the old ship was run aground in Skápadalur Valley where it remains to this day.
