See Grand Central Terminal Dark Mark, NYC, New York

When smoking indoors was standard the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal became black and most people did not know there is something behind it. In 1996, Metropolitan Transportation Authority started a two-year, nearly $200 million renovation of Grand Central. They decised to leave a 9"x5" area of grim in the northwest corner, where the celestial blue of the ceiling mural meets the marble.
