See Gunsmoke Movie Set, Johnson Canyon, Kanab, Utah

The television series of Gunsmoke ran from 1955 to 1975 and is said to be one of the longest running prime-time shows on television. There were 635 episodes and many of the outdoor scenes for this show were shot in Johnson Canyon near Kanab, Utah. Remains of an old west movie set in southern Utah, in use between the mid-1940s and the late-1960s. In addition to scenes from a number of movies, episodes of several TV series were filmed here, including Gunsmoke and Death Valley Days. Although it is usually called "The Gunsmoke Set," this was not the primary "Dodge City" set for the long-running TV series. The false fronts were removed from most of the structures many years ago, and over forty years of weather and vandalism have taken a heavy toll. The site is on private property, but is easily visible from the main road into Johnson Canyon, about five miles from the junction with Highway 89, and about ten miles east of Kanab "Little Hollywood", Utah.
