Based on the 1988 Jon Waters film of the same name, the musical takes place during the 1960s against a backdrop of the racial tension so prevalent in Baltimore, Maryland. The main character is a teenager named Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of fame. She’s also extremely optimistic and stirs things up on The Corny Collins Show by fighting to stop racial segregation on the popular TV show.
