Hike to Hengifoss & Litlanesfoss Waterfalls, Iceland

Not far from Egilsstadir, Iceland, there are two jaw-dropping waterfalls. The highest and most famous is Hengifoss, but perhaps even more impressive is Litlanesfoss. Litlanesfoss waterfall passes through a field of remarkably regular six-sided columns of volcanic rock, called pillar basalt, were created when lava cooled down over a long period of time. Hengifoss is said to be Iceland's 2nd tallest waterfall at 118 m (387 ft). The most special thing about the waterfall are multicolored layers in the basalt rock behind waterfall The falls are located on the hike to Hengifoss Falls (about half way from the car park of the 2.5km overall hike). There are smaller waterfalls deep in the gorge adjacent to the trail.
