See Holetown Monument, Holetown, Barbados

The Holetown Monument, commemorating initial English claim and later settlement of Barbados. On May 4th, 1625, Captain John Powell landed an English ship on Barbados’ deserted shores. This landing is said to have been a navigational error. Nevertheless, Powell claimed the island in the name of King James 1st of England. The first settlement began on 17 February 1627, near what is now Holetown.
