Hoover Dam, Arizona & Nevada
View Original Description
A trip to Lake Mead isn’t complete without a stop at the incredible Hoover Dam. Once known as Boulder Dam, Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, right on the border between Arizona and Nevada.
Beginning around 1900, officials began investigating Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation and produce hydroelectric power. The project was authorized in 1928, with construction lasting between 1931 and 1936. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin Roosevelt, and was controversially named in honor of President Herbert Hoover.
If you live in certain parts of Nevada, Arizona or California, there’s a chance some of your power is generated at Hoover Dam.
TIPS:
Through traffic is no longer allowed across Hoover Dam, though dam visitors are allowed to use the existing roadway to approach from the Nevada side and cross to parking lots and other facilities on the Arizona side.
All vehicles are subject to search at the security checkpoint located 1 mile from the dam (Nevada side).
