Explore Hoshizuna no Hama Beach (Star Sand Beach), Iriomote Island, Japan

Tudumari-no-hama (Tsukigahama Beach or Star Sand Beach) on the Okinawan island of Iriomote is apparopiatly names due to each particle of sand looks like a minuscule star or sunburst. The sand is actually shells from single-cell organisms. The shallow water is well-suited to snorkeling. The island does not have an airstrip, and most visitors—over 390,000 in 2006—arrive from Ishigaki by ferry, a 31.4 km ride to Uwahara Port on Iriomote's northeast coast or Ōhara Port on the southeast coast.
