See Hvítserkur, Iceland
Hvitserkur is a spectacular rock in the sea on the Northern coast of Iceland. Legends say it is a petrified troll. On this photo Hvitserkur reflects in the sea water after the midnight sunset. Hvítserkur is a 15 m high basalt stack along the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula.
The rock has two holes at the base, which give it the appearance of a dragon who is drinking. The base of the stack has been reinforced with concrete to protect its foundations from the sea.
The legend tells that Hvítserkur was a troll with three legs who wanted to destroy the monastery Þingeyrar by bombarding it with a large rock and who forgot to retreat from the light and was turned to stone in the sunrise. The stunning silhouette of this rock have inspired many legends and nicknames. Emerging from the water, this massive basalt block of 15 meters high, looks like a troll, an elephant or a dinosaur, it is up to your imagination.
You can see many birds shelter in every corner of the rock cut out by the erosion of the ocean. Hvítserkur rock offers a landscape which constantly moves at the rhythm of time and tides.
