Igła Deotymy (Needle of Deotyma), Ojców National Park, Poland
View Original Description
Needle of Deotyma is a monadnock in the Prądnik Valley in the Ojcowski National Park at the mouth of the Wrześnik Gorge.
It is a characteristic slender rock needle built of Jurassic rocky limestones . It was formed as a result of karst processes. The name of the rock comes from the word Deotyma - the literary pseudonym of Jadwiga Łuszczewska . It was given in honor of the poet's visit to Ojców in 1853. She reportedly lived in the villa "Under the Crown", next to Igła Deotyma, and it was here in the Prądnik Valley that she drew inspiration for her poems.
Deotyma's needle rises alone on the eastern side of the Prądnik stream , between the Małe Skały and the Kawalerskie Rocks . Next to the rock, there are single buildings of the inhabitants. The rock is not available for rock climbing. In its surroundings, there are paternity birches (planted), a very rare species, known from only a few sites (currently 11 sites have been located). It is entwined with grapevine, whose leaves turn an intense red color in autumn.
